We have come a long way since we started to document life.

Going to the cloud means that you no longer own the infrastructure. Just like you rent the building, you lease a car or you might even use a computer that is owned by a service provider.

We are moving away from an on-premises approach. This is a process that started a few years ago.

The Times They Are a Changin'

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” “But if you try, sometime you find. You get what you need”

Reasons to go to the cloud

  • Cost. We are already paying for Microsoft 365 that supports your mail, OneDrive, Office apps like: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. When we bring over the SharePoint content from on-premises to cloud, we can save a lot of money by decommissioning the on-premises.
  • Service grade. The current standard can in no way be compared to the standard that was available 10 years ago. Via cloud we can be really work: any device, 24/7 all over the world (as long as we have Internet and even off line use is supported)
  • Deep integration. All M365 components work fine together. It’s a well balanced configuration.
  • Because we are using the migration to get closer and closer to the standard, we are able to embrace new solutions, components that Microsoft is releasing. Keeping it close to the standard also means that the platform is more robust. All patches are thoroughly tested by Microsoft, on standard features, before they are released to the tenants.

Does cloud computing affect you?

It doesn’t

  • Providing you’re not an application manager or an infrastructure specialist.
  • If you are an operational user of an application you won’t even notice it is cloud-based, providing you have sufficient Internet capabilities, and even that is covered.

Imagine, just imagine.

You are going to a library and before you enter the building, you ask the operator if the building is rented or property, and you decide on entering based on that criteria.

Our guest users make use of our library, and the content in it is under our custody.

It’s not that you bring your baby to daycare and ask the operator if the building is rented or property. The babies that you put in their care will still be owned by the parents. They can pick them up whenever they feel like that.

In a public cloud solution like Microsoft 365, we rent the infrastructure and the content (our babies) is owned by Petroleux. We can pick them up when we want to do so and relocate them to another environment. That comes with enormous cost and this does not add up to the investments we have to make in relation to the service.

Über den Wolken muss die Freiheit wohl grenzenlos sein.

Over the clouds, freedom must be limitless

Homework

This will take you at least 2 hours.

Because SharePoint is one of the core topics and because everything you are going to put together is based on SharePoint, it is essential that you know your way around a bit before the next session.

So if you’re sitting downstairs tonight while your partner is just watching that program that you don’t like at all, grab your tablet and your earphones and spend the time wisely
